Excerpted from "My Evil Plan" -- Hall Costume Awards
Posted: May 8, 2008
It all started a year and a bit ago at Wondercon.
Catching a glimpse of Kevin and Andy at the other
end of the dealer's room, I shouted daintily "I'll do
the Hall Costuming Awards!" Kevin nodded yes, and
tragedy was born.
Anyway, it's Sunday night, and I've given out the
final "major" awards for Hall Costuming. It was very
difficult to pick the winners from the abundance
available, but I rose from the dead to the challenge
and here are the winners:
Sunday Evil Genius of the Day Awards -
Katherine Curon-Greig -- 1858 Gymnastic Costume
-
Lauren Howard - "Sally" from The Nightmare Before
Christmas
Workmanship Awards
Honorable Mentions
-
Sarcasm Hime -- Tribal Dancer
-
Stephanie Flora -- 1837-1842 Rust
Print Day dress and Bonnet (Firsttime
costumer! Entirely Hand-Sewn!)
Golden Thimble Award for Fine
Workmanship
Laurie Tavan -- Lady in Blue
Ultimate Evil Costume
Award
Loren Dearborn -- 18th
Century Wardrobe
There will still be some
given out on Monday if
possible, so keep wearing
those costume if youre
not on a committee, and
thank you for making
this convention more
exciting (I didn't think that was possible) by
showing us what you can do.
Thanks also to the tireless secret agents and my
last minute assistant Paul Sinasohn. I wouldn't
have been able to do it without his help.
Jwlhyfer de Winter
P.S. Laurie had better watch out or I will steal her
shoes!

Whether you like to compete or just see exciting costumes presented, the Masquerades are for you. A grand tradition at Science Fiction conventions, competitors show individual costumes or group costume projects on stage in very short theatrical vignettes.
Fantasy & Science Fiction Masquerade
The cornerstone of Costume-Con, the Fantasy & Science Fiction Masquerade evolved from the costume competitions that have gone on at science fiction conventions for decades. Let your imagination run wild, or recreate a costume from literature or the movies, and present it on stage. The possibilities are endless.

Major Events to expect at Costume-Con
Posted: January 3, 2007
Besides an extensive program of classes, panels and presentations, Costume-Con always includes a variety of social and competitive events ranging from intimate to extravagant!
-
Things kick off with our costumed Friday Social, themed whimsically as a Victorian Underwear Party
- Saturday afternoon our props exhibit comes to life as the Mad Science Fair
- Saturday evening is one of the major competitions of Costume-Con, the Fantasy and Science Fiction Masquerade, a staged costume competition.
- Sunday morning showcases the results of 3 different fashion and art to wear competitions on the runway in the Parallel Dimensions in Design fashion show.
- Sunday evening features another staged competition, the Historical Masquerade, featuring costumes inspired and recreating garments from the past
- Our Doll Exhibit invites you to be the judge after you've perused the work on display. It will also host a reception for ball-jointed dolls and their owners
- Many conventions wrap up with a "Dead Dog Party." Costume-Con 26, on the other hand, will do so with a Reanimated Canine party featuring the return of the oh-so-popular Mouse-Kerade!
- An assortment of other spontaneous gatherings and on-the-spot competitions

Costumer Swap Meet
Posted: April 23, 2008
The costumer swap meet will take place in the upstairs Gateway Foyer from 2 till 5pm on Saturday.
Sign up is at 1:30 in the foyer (look for a small table). Here's the fine print. Half a table costs $5. (Half is defined as 3 feet from the end to the center of a 6 ft table). It will only be possible to purchase additional spaces once everyone who has come to sign up has been assigned a first space. Two friends may team up to share two half spaces to make one table. Only CC026 members can rent a table, but you may sell to anyone. Selling or swapping are both allowed. You will need to plan to take your unsold items away with you, though we are working on getting a volunteer to take unwanted items to charity. UPDATE 4/24 -- A Nice Lady has volunteered to remove unsold and unwanted items for charitable donation if a seller so chooses.
This is listed as 3 pm in the online schedule - we're working on the glitch. |

Mad Science Fair: Props Competition Rules
Posted: April 8, 2008
Chris and Christy Bertani, Directors
The Costume-Con 26 Mad Science Fair is a props competition. For this
competition, a prop is an item that may coordinate with a costume and is
either held in the hand or carried alongside OR a costume item with
mechanical and/or electronic function beyond clothing. Though the theme
of the competition is "Mad Science", the only limit to acceptable props is
your imagination. If you have any questions about these rules, please
email madscience@cc26.org for clarification.
The Mad Science Fair will open Saturday, April 26th, 2008 with formal
Judging. The exhibit will remain open from 10am to 6pm both Saturday,
April 26th and Sunday, April 27th.
To enter a prop into the CC26 Mad Science Fair you must be a member of
CC26. The prop must be made by you, but need not be your exclusive work,
as long as other contributors are credited in some fashion.
You may enter only once per membership, but your entry may contain several
props linked by theme.
Registration:
All entries are encouraged to pre-register via the CC26 web site. There
will be at-the-con registration on Friday, but exhibit space will be
parceled out on a first-come, first-serve basis. Deadline for on-site
registration is at the Mad Science Fair location, ten minutes before the
Judges start their walk.
Rules:
1 No fire, flame, flashes, firecrackers, or explosions will
be permitted inside the hotel. If you have an incendiary component that
you wish to demonstrate, please contact the Mad Science Fair directors
well ahead of time to arrange safety precautions.
2 If your prop has an electric power requirement, contact
the Mad Science Fair directors well ahead of time to arrange exhibit space
with access to plug in power.
3 If your prop has a working combustion engine, you will not be allowed
to run it inside the hotel. If you wish to demonstrate this element of
your prop, contact the Mad Science Fair directors well ahead of time to
arrange special exhibit space.
4 Your prop's action may not generate a mess that cannot
easily be swept up. (The "no peanut butter" rule.) The venue for the Mad
Science Fair is a standard carpeted hotel conference room, and WILL
continue to be so after the event is over. If you have a "messy" action
you must exercise, contact the Mad Science Fair directors well ahead of
time to arrange special exhibit space.
5 There must be some display of skill in creating and
executing a design. No purchased, bespoke, rented or inherited props may
be exhibited in the Mad Science Fair. Props previously entered as
elements in other competitions (Masquerades, etc...) ARE acceptable.
6 The Mad Science Fair Directors have the full authority to
eliminate anyone from the competition on the grounds of bad taste, danger
to self and/or others, violation of the above rules, or any other reason
deemed sufficient. Our will is arbitrary and whimsical.
Skill Levels:
As there has never been a Mad Science Fair before, entries will be judged
in only two skill levels: Skilled Professional and Talented Amateur. If
you make more than 30% of your yearly income using those skills that
created your entry, you are a Professional, for the purposes of this
contest.
Awards:
Entries will be judged whimsically and arbitrarily, with weight given to
presentation of entry, skill of manufacture and other, less measurable
criteria.
Award categories will be arbitrary and decided by the judges, whose whims
will be final.
Documentation:
We highly encourage documentation. Please display your documentation
with your entry.
Basic Documentation:
- Name of prop(s)
- Name(s) of all designer(s) and maker(s)
- What makes your prop worthy of our attention?
Advanced Documentation -- In going beyond the minimal requirements, your documentation might include the following:
-
Pictures of visual sources, such as artworks, drawings, and
sketches that you used
- Rationale for design and for choices of materials and techniques
- Test samples for materials and techniques used or discarded
- Brief descriptions of any special skills or tools you used
- Pictures of the work in progress
Outstanding documentation is amusing, informative and enhances the exhibit
space.
If you have any questions, please contact the Directors of the
Costume-Con 26 Mad Science Fair Props Competition : Chris and Christy
Bertani E-mail: madscience@cc26.org
Phone: 650-988-9676, please leave a message
The Mad Science Fair Directors would like to thank the Historical
Masquerade Directors from whom we cribbed this format and many of these
rules. |
